CHALI MULENGA, Kazungula
THE GOVERNMENTS OF ZAMBIA AND BOTSWANA have urged the contractor
for the Kazungula Bridge to speedy up the construction works instead of wasting
time in making catch up plans.
Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Yamfwa Mukanga said it is unacceptable that the consultant and his contractor
were busy making catch plans on the time that was being lost.
“Let’s do some serious catch works or not
simply plans. We don’t want to so many catch plans, which might end up reaching
20 catch plans without anything to show on the ground,” he said.
This came to light when, Mr Mukanga toured the Kazungula
bridge site, he said the people are interested in seeing the bridge on the
river.
He said the contractor should ensure that there
is quality work that is being done on the site.
“You must ensure that there is safety on the
site and that should be coupled with quality which must be taken into
consideration,” he said.
Mr Mukanga advised the contractor to ensure
that the labour force is increased on the site so that they catch up with the lost
time.
He said it is worrying that even small issues
of constructing the simple structures on the sites had not been done.
Mr Mukanga further urged the contractor to
improve on safety of the project site as it would not be good to lose lives on
the site.
And Botswana Minister of Transport and Communication
Tshenolo Mabeo said the people are not interested in the small activities that
the contractor was doing on the ground.
Mr Mabeo said he was skeptical on the progress
of the works that the contractor had done.
“You give us a reassurance that the works will
be done on time, that is our main concern looking at the progress that has been
made so far, we are not convinced that you are going to catch up,” he said.
And Daewoo E and C vice president Yongwoo
William Kim said they would like to operate on 24 hours so that they can catch
up.
Mr Kim who is also project manager said they
would be recruiting safety officer from Korea so that they have enhanced
safety.
Mr Kim
said company does not want to destroy its reputation that it had achieved over
the years.
And Kazungula Bridge Project, Consultant
Kobamelo Kgoboko said they had made the fifth catch so that they can catch on
the project.
He said the works had been stopped for about
three times because of the safety concerns.
Mr Kgoboko said the contractor was quite
experienced and had undertaken such works before. End
