RSZ run down

By Chali Mulenga Zambia Railway board chairman Solomon Muzyamba has welcomed President Michael Sata’s directive to newly appointed minister of Justice Wynter Kabimba to examine the freight and passenger concession agreement involving the Government, Railway Systems of Zambia (RSZ) which was signed in 2003 as it is loaded against the Zambia.   Speaking in Livingstone, he said that the directive by the president was long overdue and it is for the good of the country.   He said the board had made are recommendation to its line ministry that the Government should repossess the company if it does want the concession agreement to reviewed.   He said that the concession had a lot of areas in the concession that should have been reviewed are not for the good of the country.   “If we allow RSZ to continue to operate without any amendments to the concession agreement, we would have no railway line left or to talk about,” he said.   “If we cannot agree to ...

disability infrastructure key to tourism

By Chali Mulenga COMMUNITY Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Zambia, a Non-Governmental Organisation which promotes the rights of disabled people, has called the introduction of a law which will compel developers to ensure that their structures are friendly to the people living with disability. CBR Zambia senior advisor Alick Nyirenda said there need for the country to introduce a piece of legislation which would ensure that all infrastructure in the country were friendly to disabled people. He said accessible infrastructure was required especially as Zambia is preparing to co-host the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly in Livingstone next year. ZCTU affiliates to merge

By Chali Mulenga The unions that are affiliated to Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) have resolved that they will soon start the process of merging in their sectors. The union also resolved that there is need to respect the strong unions to lead the negotiations. The resolutions by the ZCTU affiliates were made in Livingstone at new Fairmount hotel where a ZCTU workshop in collaboration with Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions which ended on Tuesday night . ZCTU secretary general Roy Mwaba confirmed that the unions had resolved and agreed that they would merge as a way of having a strong voice. MAZHANDU Family Bus kills unidentified pedestrian woman

By Chali Mulenga   A MAZHANDU Family Bus has hit and killed unidentified pedestrian woman as the driver of the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle at the curve around Senkobo area in Livingstone on Wednesday night, Southern Province deputy commissioner of police Fred Mutondo has said. Mr Mutondo said the fatal accident occurred on Wednesday around 21: 50 hours after the driver Kabwe Salimu, aged 36, of Lusaka was trying to overtake another vehicle at the curve near Senkobo area. Speaking in an interview in Livingstone, Mr Mutondo said Mr Salimu had been arrested and he was currently in police custody “Mr Salimu was driving a Mazhandu Marcopolo bus registration number ABK 8285 which was coming from Lusaka to Livingstone when the accident happened. As he was trying to overtake another vehicle at a curve, he hit and killed unidentified pedestrian woman on the spot,” he said.
