ZCTU affiliates to merge

The unions that are affiliated to Zambia
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) have resolved that they will soon start the
process of merging in their sectors.
The union also resolved that there is
need to respect the strong unions to lead the negotiations.
The resolutions by the ZCTU affiliates were
made in Livingstone at new Fairmount hotel where a ZCTU workshop in
collaboration with Norwegian Confederation
of Trade Unions which ended on Tuesday
night.
ZCTU secretary general Roy Mwaba
confirmed that the unions had resolved and agreed that they would merge as a
way of having a strong voice.
He explained that the process would be
looked into
And after the meeting some of unions spoken
to namely, Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) General Secretary
Geoffrey Simuntala confirmed that the unions had agreed on merging as
the idea is good.
Mr Simuntala explained that unions would have
to lobby Government to put in place legislation to help reduce the formation of
splinter unions.
The secretary general said that he was hopeful that Government would be
helpful to the unions as it comes with labour reforms the aspect of having a lot of unions would be addressed.
Mr Simuntala said that his union is
happy with the resolution that unions should merge but expressed concern that
the legal frame work should be worked on the formation of unions.
He said the merging is a good idea but there
are critical issues which are legal in nature that needed to be sorted out.
“We need to address the critical issues as
we know that merging would make the union have a strong voice,” he said.
Mr Simuntal said that the resolve to let the
strong union lead is alos good as the unioins would have strong voice and more barraging
power.
And National Union of Commercial and Industrial
Workers (NUCIW) general secretary Seth Paradza said that his union has been the
pioneer of unity for the union it their particular sector.
He said
his union was very happy and that finally the only way to help the unions win
the battle in the battle labour movement had come.
He said
that his union has been discussing with other union in the sector like the Zambia
grain meat and allied workers and national plant and agriculture allied workers
union.
“We have identified that workers in the same
sector must be united and that the process of reuniting take long we are
aware,” he said.
“We want
to now consult our members on how best to go about meeting with other unions,”
he said.
