The ministry of agriculture and livestock says livestock is one of the drivers of wealth creation and a means of improving the food security in Africa.   Minister of the agriculture and livestock Emmanuel Chenda said in Livingstone at Chrismar hotel,   during the common market for eastern and southern Africa (COMESA) regional stakeholders workshop on theme “livestock and related policies, animals health strategies and veterinary legislation.”   In a speech read on his behalf by deputy minister of agriculture and livestock Benson Kapaya, he said that the sector is an important contributor to achieving the millennium development goals (MDGs). “The wide occurrence of disease of economic importance including emerging and re-emerging diseases mainly related to the existing climate change and weak institutions poses huge challenges on the efforts being made to improve production and productivity of the livestock agriculture,” he said. “Emerging and re-emerging epizoo...

The two major opposition political parties in southern province, Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) and United Party for National Development (UPND)   have ganged up against the ruling the Patriotic Front (PF) in the forth coming Livingstone parliamentary seat. The two political parties have since confirmed the development that they will support one candidate the UPND will put up. UPND Southern province chairperson John Kapepe said in interview that the UPND and MMD had agreed to work together in the forth coming bye election in Livingstone. He said the teaming up of the two was not an indication that the parties were glittery over the forth coming by election. Mr Kapepe said the two parties are now making arrangements with the low structures of the two political parties at the grass root so that they could support one candidate. “We are going to field a candidate on whom the two parties will agree to support,” he said. Southern Province permanent secretary Edwin Zumbunu has directed the Livingstone City Council (LCC) use the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) to procure a grader for the city. He was speaking at Livingstone at Civic Centre on Friday, when he addressed councillors from the 17 wards in the council chamber, he said that the grader would help open up the city for development and that without areas being opened up there would be no development in the districts in Zambia. Mr Zumbunu said the buying of the grader is the direction that the LCC will have to take and that the council will select two people that will learn more about how the grader has been helpful in other districts. “There is need to open Livingstone for projects so this is the direction that we going to take in the use of the CDF,” he said.   Mr Zumbunu called on the use for public funds properly and urged LCC to emulate other councils in the province like Kalomo that had decided to procure a district grade...

THREE prime suspects purportedly linked to the recent killing of the Spanish pilot Sergio Valle and a security guard Jacob Chirwa, at Zig Zag lodge in Livingstone two weeks ago, appeared yesterday before the Livingstone magistrate’s court on fresh charges jointly after the third suspect was arrested last week. Two of the suspects, Lucky Dube, 26, a charcoal burner of Libuyu and Crispin Mafulo, 24, of Malime village, had appeared before the court last week for mention and Magistrate Andrew Kasongo charged them with five counts of aggravated robbery, attempted murder and murder.  But Mr Kasongo said he had to read fresh charges to the suspects because Frank Mulosi, 30, a brick layer of Libuyu compound, had just joined the duo and charged them with seven counts of aggravated robbery, attempted murder and murder which they said they understood.
