PF vs MMD and UPND, the battle for Livingstone
The two major opposition
political parties in southern province, Movement for Multi-Party Democracy
(MMD) and United Party for National Development (UPND) have ganged up against the ruling the
Patriotic Front (PF) in the forth coming Livingstone parliamentary seat.
The two political
parties have since confirmed the development that they will support one
candidate the UPND will put up.
UPND Southern province chairperson
John Kapepe said in interview that the UPND and MMD had agreed to work together
in the forth coming bye election in Livingstone.
He said the teaming up
of the two was not an indication that the parties were glittery over the forth
coming by election.
Mr Kapepe said the two
parties are now making arrangements with the low structures of the two
political parties at the grass root so that they could support one candidate.
“We are going to field
a candidate on whom the two parties will agree to support,” he said.
Mr Kapepe said the MMD
is not fielding any candidate as UPND is popular party that has received a lot
people that want to contest on the party ticket.
“We want a person that
will represent the people of Livingstone effectively as high quality party we
are attracting a lot of people,” he said.
MMD Southern Province
chairperson Edgar Keembe has also said that the two parties had understating
that they would field one candidate a way of strengthening the opposition in
parliament.
Mr Keembe said the working
together of the two political parties would help strengthen the opposition and would
help to give the PF government checks and balances in parliament.
He said it is not the first time that the two
parties would be collaborating in a bye election.
“We want to work as at
team so that we can offer checks and balanced to the PF government,” he said.
PF district chairperson
Freddie Chibuye said that the party is not worried about the opposition making
alliances.
He said the opposition had made alliances
before the PF had triumphed over their alliances.
He said that the issue of the opposition
coming up with alliances is not something that is new.
This
follows the announcement by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Public
Relations Manager Chris Akufuna that the Livingstone seat bye election will be
held on Thursday July 5, 2012.
The
seat fail vacant following the Livingstone High Court’s decision to nullify the
election of MMD’s Lukulo Katombola after he was petitioned by losing UPND
candidate Fredrick Chuunga and PF’s Joseph Akafumba on alleged corrupt
practices and malpractices.
