A police officer in Livingstone has been shot
in unclear circumstances by another police officer using a riot gun.
Southern Province
Police Commissioner Ms. Charity Katanga confirmed the shooting which incidence
happened on Tuesday around 10 hours at railways station.
Ms Katanga said that
constable Paston Mukumbuta, 24 of
Livingstone police camp was shot by inspector Aaron Jenga-Jenga, 27 of the same
police camp using riot shotgun
designed or modified for use as a primarily defensive weapon.
She said that the inspector
Jenga-Jengea had fired the gun thinking that it was not loaded.
Ms Katanga said when
the officer fired the riot gun, hit constable Mukumbuta and injured the chick
bone of the victim.
She said the constable
Mukumbuta bleed profusely after being shot at and was rushed to the hospital.
Ms Katanga said that
officer has since been charged for firing a gun without authority.
She said the officer
was rushed to theatre upon reaching the hospital.
Meanwhile, Ms Katanga
said murder suspects linked to the killing of Collum Coal Mine supervisor Wu
Shenghai in Sinazongwe district in Southern Province on August 4 this year would
appeared in court on Wednesday.
Sylvester Siachebani 27
and
Alex Sindebuka 25 appeared in court for mention on the alleged murder.
Meanwhile the police
commission has explained that the police presence at the provincial
administration officer and the district commissioner’s office yesterday was to secure
the offices.
She said that police
had received information that there would be some disturbances.
She said the
information was that PF carders would protest against the
Livingstone
district commissioner Paul Sensele.
Ms Katanga said after
she had assurance from the Southern Province Permanent Secretary Dr,
Chileshe Mulenga that he would met the PF leadership.
She said that it then that
the police decide to move out of the area after it had secured the area.
Dr. Mulenga confirmed having
met with the police and that he would hold a meeting with the PF district leadership
in Livingstone, over the matter.
The Permanent
Secretary could not confirm that the carders were from PF or not but he would
have an emergency meeting with the leadership.
There was heavy police
presence this yesterday after around 06 hours to up to about just after 09
hours.
