THE First Republican President Kenneth Kaunda has called on the people in Zambia to support the Government of President Michael Sata because he is a hard working leader as well as progressive.
Dr Kaunda said there is need for the people to give president Sata more time to govern this country.
Dr Kaunda was speaking on Tuesday at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula international in Livingstone, where he was met on arrival by southern province permanent secretary, Livingstone Mayor Aggrey Njekwa, Livingstone town clerk Vivian Chikoti and Airport manager Joseph Mumbi.
“I have no problems in supporting him as I am supporting an innocent man, President Sata is looking after me, just give him some time to lead Zambia in a good way,” The first republican president said.
He said he was not cadre for the Patriot Front (PF) Government but he was retired first republican at 88 years.
He said under the leadership young people like president Sata, Zambia would achieve great things as the country would change for the better.
“The president needs the support of all of us he is doing, what I used to do, let’s support him as God is great,” he said.
Dr Kaunda said he was happy with the hard work of president Sata and appointed him as Governor and that he was happy that president Sata has continued from where he left from in governing this country.
He said that he was retired first president of this country, which is progressing well under the leadership of president Sata.
“We have a great duty to support the great son of Zambia president Sata, vice president (Guy) Scot and his ministers as with these young people Zambia will achieve development,” he said.
The first republican president said there is need to build the country as one Zambia, one nation and called on people to stick to the teachings of the bible of love your neighbour as you love yourself.
He said that people were trying hard to follow this commandment as the people in other countries are killing each other.
Dr Kaunda said when President Frederick Chiluba took over from him as all he wanted was to destroy him by putting into prison.
“When he put me in prison, I stopped eating drinking and shaving until I was forced by the former Tanzania president Julius Nyerere who also said that he would stop eating drinking shaving until I started eating drinking and shaving,” he said.
He said that the stance that Nyeree had taken forced him to begin eating drinking and shaving before they could tell him the reason he had been arrested for.
The first republican president said he just wanted to know why he had been arrested and that is the only time that he would start eating drinking shaving.
The former head of state explained that when he was released from prison to go home, he found prison officers at his home and a lot of armed police officers looking after his house for about six months.
He said that Chiluba wanted to destroy him and everything that he had done for the country.
Dr Kaunda added that Levy Mwanawasa tried to rebuild this country also looked after him until when Mr Rupiah Banda took over, who embraced Chiluba.
He said that Mr Banda made chiluba his political and economic advisor and furthermore dropped all the corruption charges against him.
And Dr Mulengea thanked Dr Kaunda for the contribution that he made to the development of this country.
He noted the education sector had made a lot of impact as a lot of people were trained through his reign as president.
And mayor Njekwa thanked the first republican president for recognizing the chiefdom of Musokotwane as he was grandchild of the chiefdom.
The first republican president is Livingstone for a holiday until Sunday.
