Vandalism worry SWASCO
By Chali Mulenga
Southern water and sewerage company (SWASCO) has invested K80 million into replacing the vandalised man-hole covers with the concrete ones in Livingstone.
SWASCO senior regional manager Gift Monde said the vandalised man-hole covers had contributed to the clogging of the sewerage system in Livingstone.
Speaking in an interview at his office in Livingstone, he said the company had lost a lot metal man- holes to suspected scrap metal dealers who were buying the metals.
“Since the man-holes are open it is very easy for sand to go in and block the sewerage, the heavy down pour has compounded to the problem,” he said.
The senior regional manager said that Livingstone being sandy, most of the sand was finding its way into the man holes that had been left open by the people casing the vandalism.
Mr Monde said that the company was trying to change the man-hole covers in the city as the sand was going into the sewerage network thereby blocking it.
He said that sand that blocks the sewerage network slows down the movement.
“It is unfortunate the people throw things like door mats in the sewerage system,” he said.
The senior regional manager stressed on the need for the people to be mindful of what they throw into the sewerage.
He urged the people to safe guard the infrastructure that the water company had put in place for them.
Mr Monde said that it is unfortunate that the infrastructure the people vandalise is sold in their area.
He said the water company had beefed up its staffing level in the sewerage unblocking section is increased.
“We have engaged about 8 casual workers to ensure that the issue of blocked sewerage is handled in this period of the rainy season which is very critical,” he said.
He called on the people to safe guard the infrastructure that the company was putting in place.
And Mr Monde said that the problem of water supply was still a challenge to the water company as the water treatment plant was being loaded shed by the power company.
He noted that the water was however enjoy supply at the water intake unless if they was a major break down or some disturbance on the line.
The senior regional manager revealed that ZESCO has promised it would resolve the power problem to the water company by July next year.
“ZESCO power outages have not yet been resolved and it is for this reason that as SWASCO, we cannot guarantee water supply on a 24 hour base to our customers,” he said.
Mr Monde was however quick to note that the problem of rationing water supply could be blamed on ZESCO as some areas do not receive water supply despite having power.
Meanwhile the water company has appeal the Government to quickly release the money for it to prepare for the UNWTO.
He said that the company was still waiting for the K48 billion which it had requested from the Government so that it can prepare adequately for the water sector in the city of Livingstone.
