family is critical

LIVINGSTONE mayor Milford Maambo has said the family is the very core
of societies' existence and it plays a critical role as an agent of
socialisation.
Mr Maambo said families are the building blocks of any a nation and
they set foundation of the development of a country.
Speaking at the Livingstone children s' village a speech rad on his
behalf by deputy mayor Fred Sikazwe during the celebration of the
international day of the families on Thursday under the theme
'families matter for the achievement of development goals'.
"It is heart-warming to learn that SOS children village gives children
that are risk of losing parental care and those that have lost
parental care an opportunity to belong to a family," he said.
Mr Maambo said the Zambian government is committed to the achievement
of the millennium development goals which ultimately lead to families
attaining the goals.
He said on MDG number one which relates to eradication of extreme
poverty and hunger the Government has put in place measures such as
the social cash transfer which is helping vulnerable families to meet
some of their basic needs.
Mr Maambo said the Government is helping with the farmers in put
support programme helps vulnerable but viable farmers to produce food
for their families.
"The government has embarked on programme to construct primary schools
teacher's houses and supporting school facilities across the country,"
he said.
Mr Maambo said Government is doing something to ensure there is
reduction of child mortality, improvement of maternal health,
combating HIVAIDS malaria and other diseases.
 He said the Government is upgraded and increased health facilities in
all the province in Zambia.
"The recruitment of health personnel further impact on the health of
the families and attainment of the MGD four, five and six, these are a
few examples of how the government is striving to contribute to
families development goals," Mr Maambo said.
 The SOS village director Watson Ng'andu said the SOS is committed to
contributing to government efforts in the attainment of the millennium
development goals.
Mr Ng'andu said through the family based care programme and family
strengthening programme the organisation is ensuring that all children
attain a full course of primary schooling.
"On the health point the organisation provides facilities health care
for children and care givers through the medical centres and
government clinics," he said.
