zawa chargesworry union
From CHALI MULENGA in Livingstone.
HOTEL, Catering, Tourism & Allied Workers Union of Zambia (HCTAWUZ)
general secretary Michelo Chizyuka says the charging of park entry at
the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) check point to some lodges in the
park in ill time as it is retrogressive to the development of the
tourism sector.
Mr Chizyuka said it is unfortunate that his team of negotiators that
went to bargain for the salary of the workers in the park had to be
charged park entry fees despite them not going for game viewing.
Speaking in an interview in Livingstone, he said the union wonders
why some of these polices that do not promote tourism are encouraged
to be implemented in Livingstone whose core is contributor to the
town's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is tourism.
"I can confirm that some of our negotiators from our union had gone to
one of the lodges and they were asked to pay park entry fee despite
them not going to do game viewing," he said.
Mr Chizyuka said the union feels that the move is unreasonable as in
some parts of the park when the union is not charge when they
undertake the same activity.
HCTAWUZ general secretary said the tour operators will not argue with
ZAWA but they will simply pass on the cost to the tourists.
He said there is need to remember that some of the tourists are well
traveled and they compare the cost of what they have spent on their
travels.
"We wonder as a union what some of these polices want to achieve
whether they are for they are for the development of tourism or not.
Some of these polices are not equal to the pronouncements," HCTAWUZ
general secretary said.
"It is such type of policies that make Zambia become a very expense
tourism destination as some of the fees are inconsiderate," he said.
Mr Chizyuka said the Government institutions should always consult
other stakeholders before coming with some of these policies are
injurious to the development of tourisms.
He said there are countries in the continent that have attracted a lot
of tourists as they ensured that they have favorable packages that are
reasonable for the tourists.
ZAWA charges K12.50 to Zambian for entry into the park.
