MP commends Govt

KATOMBOLA Member of Parliament Derrick Livune has applauded
Government's decisions to investment in the 1,600 megawatts Batoka
hydro-power project in his constituency.
Mr Livune said the Batoka hydro project will benefit Zambia and
Zimbabwe would create a lot of jobs once implemented through the
Zambezi River Authority (ZRA).
"The Batoka North Hydro power station and Batoka South Hydro power
station will generate 800 megawatts each, the Batoka North Hydro power
is the one that will be on the Zambian side, in my constituency," he
said.
Speaking in an interview in Livingstone, he said the Batoka North
Hydro power station and Batoka South Hydro power station on be in
Zambia and Zimbabwean side respectively.
Mr Livune commended the move by the Government to undertake the hydro
power project in area as people will be able to find an alternative
from of livelihood apart from farming curio trading the people.
"After the completion of the project it would attract commerce as they
will be townships near the power stations, people will be able to
engage in trade," he said.
Mr Livune said the project will contribute to the growth of the gross
domestic product (GDP) of only the constituency but the district as a
whole.
"The Batoka hydro power project is welcome in the district as signs
that something will happen can be seen by the road that has been
constructed to the site," he said.
Mr Livune said GDP of the people will change from the beginning of the
project through to its completion of the project as the people will
find jobs.
He said the project would create jobs at the construction stage as it
is expected to be completed within five years.
He urged the Government to revisit on ZRA agreement so that Zambia
should also have a chief executive officer.
Mr Livune said there is also a lot of bias in the way some of the
things are implemented as the other country seems to benefit from the
agreement.
"How can you have all the chief executive officer, engineers and even
drivers from Zimbabwe just the pretext that we have a office in this
country this should change, we need to wake up as a country," he said
Mr Livune said he would be traveling to Lusaka so that he met the
minister of energy so that this issue could discussed further.
