suba on timber
By CHALI MULENGA in Livingstone
MINISTRY of lands, environment and natural resources, permanent
secretary Ing'tu Suba has said Government will not spared the people
that engage in illegal timber trader as her ministry will crack the
whip on them in the country.
Ms Suba said all the foreigners dealing in illegal timber business
will be subsequently be deported adding the Zambian nationals will be
sent to prison.
She said the Government will not leave any stones unturned as it
cracks down on the illegal timber traders in the country.
Ms Suba was speaking in Livingstone when some of the over 30 trucks
impounded in southern province were offloading their timber at
Government stores on Friday.
"We are going to seal all the borders so that no illegal timer trader
is allowed as we have formed six task force units in the country to
ensure that we curb the illegal trader of timber in the country.
She said the ministry will intensify their operations in ensuring the
crackdown on illegal timber traders is successful.
"We also wants to form ten task forces on timber so that so each
province will have one task force and eventually it will go down to
the district level where we are going to have sub task force," she
said.
Ms Suba said on Friday that four trucks have been impounded in Sesheke
and all the offenders have been put in custody all their equipment has
been seized and will appear in court on Monday.
She added that another truck has been seized in Chirundu and a team
of officers has been send to the area to ensure that they curb the
illegal timber trader.
"What is happening here in Livingstone is a small fraction of what is
going on in other parts of the country like in Lusaka, where we have
even followed them into the welfare houses. We have asked the Zambia
police and Zambia Army to help us with their trucks so that we get all
the timber," she said.
Ms Suba said Government will seize all the equipment of the traders
that are found wanting by using the laws that are in place.
She warned Zambians against engaging in such vices as this would have
a negative impact on the country both on the environment and on the
economy.
"You should leave the trees for the future generations just like our
fore fathers did leave the same trees for us, so if we find you will
lose your freedom as you will got prison," she said.
Ms Suba noted that the trucks will asked to be at court whenever they
would be called upon to do so.
And director of SM transport Steady Moonga thanked Government for
releasing their trucks and though they had been affected as they had
lost business as their trucks had been impounded for a long time.
"We have lost income through the impounding of our trucks we are not
blaming Government,"he said
