CBR-media key to disability awareness

Community based rehabilitation (CBR) programme advisor in Zambia Alick
Nyirenda has praised the media in Zambia for bring out issues on
disability to the fore.
Mr Nyirenda said the media is helping to influence the people living
with disability to out in the open about disability and that the
increased media coverage on disability has contribute to people being
conscious of disability.
Speaking in an interview with the times on the side lines of the
stakeholders sensitisation meeting in Livingstone, he said people now
the importance of bring out their disability as they would be able to
get help.
“The true faces of people living with disability are news items now a
thing that never used to happen often,” he said.
He said there is need for society to know that the people living with
disability can contribute positively to society by being members of
parliament, doctors or teachers.
Mr Nyirenda said that it is sad that people think that they are far
from being disabled and the people must know that the non-communicable
diseases are contributing to more new disabilities.
“Disability is not that something is wrong on someone body but it
societal as the society that we are living in are is disabled,”
He explained that there is wrong altitude towards disability as the
community should not wait for the hospital or social welfare to do
something about disability.
Mr Nyirenda said his organisation is happy that the Government is
working on social protection of the people with disability.
A CBR expert from Uganda Dr Alice Nganwa said the environment restrict
the participation of people living with disabilities.
She said they are only two thing reason disability impairment and
environment cause there are lot of restrictions.
Dr Nganwa said the normally the environment does not stimulate
children or people with disability.
“Common restrictions in the environment are negative attitude,
physical barriers and communication barriers,” she said.
