THE Ministry of Tourism in south-western regional has revealed that
the K30 billion allocated for the 2013 United Nations World Tourism
Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly is not meant for the event but
it is meant for the transformation of the Livingstone as the tourism
capital of Zambia.

Tourism development co-coordinator in the ministry for the
south-western regional Harold Mweene speking in an interview in
Livingstone, he said the money has been set side for the
transformation of Livingstone into a tourist destination and
resort-city.

Mr Mweene said President Sata is determined to make Livingstone a
tourism capital that will bring investment into the country, hence the
upgrading of the city to a tourism capital.

“The K30 billion in question was given to the ministry for the
face-lifting and transformation of Livingstone into a tourist
destination and resort-city as it was planned for in the 2012 budget
before the issue of the UNWTO came in,” Mr Mweene said.

The coordinator said Government’s preparations for the UNWTO is being
done through Cabinet and a Cabinet memorandum has already been
prepared and cleared just awaiting for its approval.

“It is now up to the committees that will be formed to begin the
implementation of this project so as to bring life to what is
currently on paper,” Mr Mweene said.

Mr Mweene said the World Bank is satisfied with what has been done so
far and brought forward by both co-hosting countries of the UNWTO.

“The World Bank is so far pleased with what has been brought forward
so far and as a ministry, we are happy that the inspectors that were
sent in March 2012 to inspect the co-hosting countries for the UNWTO
general assembly approved what they saw and found in the countries,”
he said.

The coordinator said stakeholders need not worry about whether
Livingstone will be ready and equipped to co-host the UNWTO next year.

“We are on course in our preparations and I can safely say we are
making headway in ensuring that all areas of concern by both our
stakeholders and the delegates coming will be met before hand.

“For accommodation, we are set as we currently have bed space capacity
of over 4,000 beds, from our big hotels to our reputable lodges in the
city,” Mr Mweene said.

Mr Mweene was commenting on calls by some stakeholders for information
on how the money will be used.
