CHALI MULENGA, Livingstone
MINISTRY of community development and social welfare
in Livingstone has given 21 women groups K90, 751 through a micro credit scheme
in order for them to improve their businesses.
Livingstone Member of Parliament (MP), Lawrence Evans
said 105 women from the market in the city would benefit from the micro loan
credit facility which is in the third cycle.
Speaking in a speech read on his behalf by Community
Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Zambia programme, Zambia Senior advisor, Alick
Nyirenda, at Livingstone lodge, Mr Evans
said this programme would help to promote a spirit of saving money and the
women will also become self reliant.
Mr Evans, who is also deputy Minister of Livestock
Fisheries, said it is quite impressive that the numbers of women that are
benefiting from the programme are increasing.
“Its humbling that the numbers of women, who are in
the programme in the district has continued to increase, as you might know the
country, region and globally, they are challenges of credit being faced, but
the women in this city have managed to prove that they are able to beat poverty
through their hard work,” he said.
Mr Evans urged the women to continue working hard as
it is the only way they can reduce poverty in their communities.
“Don’t divert the money so that you can get out of
poverty permanently, make sure that you use the money for intended purpose and
don’t use the money for other things,” he said.
Mr Evans said the women can only contribute to
poverty reduction if they paid back the micro loan credit so that other women
can also benefit from this revolving.
“The PF government will continue to support families
which are headed by women, so that it can help to reduce poverty in the
households,” he said.
He said Government has targeted women headed
households which are incapacitated with support such as the loan credit.
He said through such programmes the Government helps
to promote independence of individuals.
Community development and social welfare, Loan
credit officer Precious Machisa said the micro credit is meant to enhance
wealth creation.
Ms Machisa, who is also Livingstone assistant
community development officer, said each group is compromised of 10 members.
“The 10 members are encouraged to form self help
groups and they are given seed money through the village bank. They provide
social collateral,” she said.
She said the women are trained to manage their
businesses and other cross cutting. End
